I liked your mix until it made my computer crash!
So Favorites would be:
The Motorboating Merit badge packaging.
Mice Parade (heard of them, but never got a chance to listen to them, Thanks!)
Gary Numan - M.E. I love the Pleasure Principle! I listen to it at least once a month.
Dungen - Nordic rock! I have heard these guys a couple times, I am unsure if I have their album though.
And some others tracks...like Can. It was cool.
Good job, But I still haven't heard the tail end. I will see if it makes my system crash again.

This mix is kicking my ass. Really good work. Standout tracks for me so far include--shit, I don't even know where to start...The Silver Jews and Unwound (best female drummer?) tracks are so good they should have been mine. Gary Numan and Echo ("They picked up where your precious Echo left off, and you're sitting around complaining about no more Echo albums.") both great surprises. The Woven Hand song is somehow tender. But perhaps my favorite is The Advantage song--not just for nostalgia purposes, but I honestly loved that song. I played that game to just show my friends (the game itself is a smidge campy) the songs. Great cover. I'll be listening to this mix for a while.

Teacher: always good to find another Goonies II afficionado. You are right: the game is a touch odd, but the music. I don't know if you are familiar with The Advantage album "Elf Titled", but there is a cover of the Wiseman theme from Goonies II that is pungent in nostalgia..along with the rest of the album.

I'm also thinking the Numan and Dungen tracks are two of my most favorites...I DO love the Aphrodite's Child and was happy to get an Elliott Smith track I didn't have already.

The other great song I have listened to repeatedly is Sparks' "This Town Ain't Big Enough For the Both of Us"....I enjoy it on multiple levels and the music remains a part of me hours and hours and hours after I've stopped listening. This usually aggravates me, but it hasn't yet.

Also.....the Grifters number. That's my other favorite. It affected me between dusk and nighttime while I was driving that stretch of road to Sharon's house. Thanks for the mix. Mine went out Saturday, so hopefully everyone will get it in the next few days??

Joe...this mix tape has invaded my head and my face. Dungen, always good, but I had yet to hear that track. Actually there were a few instances like that. Familiar bands, with new (for me) songs Like Elliot Smith, Silkworm, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Mice Parade.

Good choices.

I loved the Vitamin C song. I especially loved that song.

And I know we spoke about Aphrodite’s Child and that I haven't ever been super into prog rawk, but that song was stellar.

A great mix. Good enough that I hopped on my scooter and cruised around until I had heard the whole thing. And then did it again.

enigma: isn't Pleasure Principle amazing? I had to flip a coin, literally, to decide which track I wanted to include. I had to do the same for Mice Parade.

Ibid: I remember the hype of Aphrodite's Child when we were trekking through Santorini and Crete, but didn't understand the appeal of the uber-hirsute Greek prog mysters until later. The drums in that track really kick my ass...and Vangelis on the keys!

Question for anyone interested: in "Punks in the Beerlight", at about 2:38 or so, doesn't it sound like David Berman sings "Punks in the beerlight, Toulouse-Lautrec!" ? ? ?

I know he doesn't say that, but I can't help but see a short french artists nursing red wine at the Moulin Rouge.

and em, I am glad you like the Grifters track. The didgeridoo mixed with the celtic elements gives that song a brooding, suppernatural sheen. I love it.

Wait, it ISN'T Toulouse Lautrec? I've carried this Silver Jews song with me for some time now and while I didn't bring my iPod with me to France (an experiment on my part), it's easy to get a song like that stuck in your head for days upon daze and maybe it was the Musee de Orsay what did it to me, but I think I've always heard Toulouse there and thought green, red, thighs of wide girth, lipstick.

Grifter said...

well damn...so far 3 of 4 lyrics engines verify that he does indeed say Toulouse-Lautrec.

Thanks for takin the fun-wind out of my supposedly-misheard-lyric-sail, gillzeroy. I guess I should perform simple google searches before posting queries that will make me look the fool, the april fool, as it were.

Joe...I can't get Aphrodite's Child off my iPod.

Just so you know.

Emily G said...

Haha, Darren, can't get it off but you're trying to but the iPod won't let you or because you can't stop listening to it? Are you using a 4 gig pod that you have to scrutinize every track you put inside? In which case, I want to know if any of my mix made the cut.

Or do you mean the rate at which Aphrodite's Child shows up on the random shuffle in your iPod is remarkably frequent?

I'm just asking for clarification because my first interpretation of what you said was that you were trying to take A.C. off but it refused, like this weird virus our old Macintosh had when I was eight. A file named .bout would appear every morning and no matter how many times you threw it in the electronic trash and emptied the electronic trash, there it would be again, the next morning, like a silent curious ghost.

Grifter said...

good follow-up Em. I am curious. You no rikey, Dangrond?

I will never post again....

i do apologize Emily for my cryptic message to Joe. My inability to properly portray my thoughts in the written form has dogged me endlessly.

As for the ambiguity, I meant to write that I have enjoyed listening to that song, in particular, time and again. Though your first interpretation is far more entertaining to think about. For some reason I pictured the song looking like My Pet Monster.

My iPod is larger than 4 gigs, but even if it were that size, I assure you, your entire mix would have made it on. It is a great mix...and i look forward to the Meat Loaf song that will end my soul.

Let us be friends once again.

Cyber hug?

Emily G said...

Hahaha!!! DARREN!! Consider yourself cyberHUGGED but when did we cease friendship?!?! I would love you in all states of iPod and Pet Monster......never any rage or disgruntlement in any of my former interpretation and posting. You are the gem in my bowl, the otter in my pop, the salt dough in my diorama. Please post always and forever.

And Joe, I will desist all fun-sucking from your lyrical sails.

Loved the mix, Joe. I don't think anyone mentioned it but the Sparks song - This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us - is amazing. That was my hands down favorite. 1) Because I love cliche movie lines of foreshadowing like "You fool! You've killed us all!" 2) I like them even more when used as a title for something like the Sparks song.

Gary Numan, lovely. Vitamin C, probably my second favorite song on there. I enjoyed Thailand and the Grifters. Thank you for introducing me to them. I'm going to check them out.

Jimmsly--Sparks are pretty excellent. I think Gillz dug "This Town Ain't.." as well...I highly suggest finding the original version. It is a rocker. And better yet, I think there is a video on YouTube which is too golden. Ron Mael is sporting his traditional Hitlerian toothbrush moustache whilst eyeing the camera like a predatory bird. It hurts me with coolness.

Glad you found a keeper or two on there Shame.

the aforementioned video, although an obvious live performance lip-synch is pure money

Got home from the gym and the cycle trip to the grocery store and what to my wondering eyes did appear? I have it rippin right now so that I can indulge in musical griftments and sun myself in the rhythmic sounds that bring about wormsign.

Thanks giuseppi! And how did you know that I was only recently taken with the idea of woodwind pedagogy? Although any book on woodwinds should start with the ice-breaker:

Q: Why is the bassoon better than the oboe?

A: %96 32DD@@? 3FC?D =@?86C]

JG,

I still listen to the Gary Neuman song about 10 times a day. I hadn't heard that song in sooooo long.

Also dug the Elliot Smith, Otis Redding, SMOKE, and Can.

Sadly, you picked prolly my least favorite Sparks song in history. Ah, well.
